The creation of a more peaceful and happier society has to begin from the level of the individual, and from there it can expand to one’s family, to one’s neighborhood, to one’s community and so on. When our community is in a state of peace, it can share that peace with neighboring communities, and so on. When we feel love and kindness toward others, it not only makes others feel loved and cared for, but it helps us also to develop inner happiness and peace. Where ignorance is our master, there is no possibility of real peace. Peace is, I think, the manifestation of human compassion. Peace is not just mere absence of violence. World peace must develop from inner peace. I totally disagree with the view that the Tibet struggle will die, and there will be no hope for Tibet, after the Dalai Lama passes away. So this body become old, and then time come, take young body.

I am sometimes sad when I hear the personal stories of Tibetan refugees who have been tortured or beaten. So that view is very helpful to maintain a peace of mind because the main destroyer of a peaceful mind is anger. ~Dalai LamaĪppearance is something absolute, but reality is not that way – everything is interdependent, not absolute. The extreme self-centered attitude is the source of suffering. Too much self-centered attitude, you see, brings, you see, isolation. Never keep in your sort of – your inner world, then create a lot of suspicion, a lot of distrust, a lot of negative things, more worry.

We need friends and friendship is based on trust. ~Dalai LamaĮven an animal, if you show genuine affection, gradually trust develops… If you always showing bad face and beating, how can you develop friendship? ~Dalai Lama Only if there is trust will there be friendship. ~Dalai Lamaįriendship depends on trust, not money, not power, not mere education or knowledge. ~Dalai LamaĪ good friend who points out mistakes and imperfections and rebukes evil is to be respected as if he reveals the secret of some hidden treasure. Friendship between Tibetan and Chinese peoples is very essential. My aim is to create a happy society with genuine friendship. But technology cannot produce compassion. I think technology really increased human ability. And, of course, there are Christian monks and nuns who already use Buddhist methods in order to develop their devotion, compassion, and ability to forgive. There are techniques of Buddhism, such as meditation, that anyone can adopt. Whether one believes in a religion or not, and whether one believes in rebirth or not, there isn’t anyone who doesn’t appreciate kindness and compassion.

~Dalai LamaĪll major religious traditions carry basically the same message, that is love, compassion and forgiveness the important thing is they should be part of our daily lives. My main concern is meeting with public because my main commitment, main interest is promotion of human value, human affection, compassion and religious harmony. More compassionate mind, more sense of concern for other’s well-being, is source of happiness. Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. ~Dalai LamaĪll religions try to benefit people, with the same basic message of the need for love and compassion, for justice and honesty, for contentment. If you want to be happy, practice compassion. If you want others to be happy, practice compassion.
